Organized classically by system, this popular text gives medical and health professions students a complete, clinically oriented introduction to neuroanatomy. Each chapter begins with clear objectives, includes clinical cases, and ends with clinical notes, clinical problem-solving, and review questions. Hundreds of full-color illustrations, diagnostic images, and color photographs enhance the text. This Seventh Edition features new information relating the different parts of the skull to the brain areas, expanded coverage of brain development and neuroplasticity, and updated information on stem cell research. The artwork has been greatly improved. New Clinical Problems have been added, and updated Clinical Notes incorporate recent advances resulting from war veterans' head injuries and treatment. A companion Website includes the fully searchable text and 454 USMLE-style review questions with answers and explanations.
Forewords & Introductions
This book provides the basic neuroanatomical facts necessary for the practice of medicine, It is designed for first and second year medical students, dental students, and allied health students. Neurological residents have found the book to be of great help during their rotations.
The information provides students with an understanding of the functional organization of the nervous system and clearly indicates how injury and disease can result in neurological deficits. The book prepares the student to interpret the many symptoms and signs presented by a neurological patient so that he or she may confidently make a diagnosis, and, where possible, institute appropriate treatment. The amount of factual information has been strictly limited to that which is clinically important. This is not a book for the Basic Neuroscientist in training.
As we enter the second millenium, with the explosion of knowledge of the normal and pathophysiological structure of the nervous system, faculty and students should pause and seriously consider what information is strictly necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Gone are the days when students were presented with masses of detail involving complicated neural connections, which not only confused the student but prevented them from recalling the essential features at the bedside.
The fifth edition has been substantially reorganized. Many of the topics have been grouped together to avoid repetition and many duplicated figures have been eliminated. The content of each chapter has been updated, obsolete material discarded and new material added.
As in the previous edition, the design of each chapter allows the reader easy access and fast retrieval of information.
Each chapter is divided into the following categories:
1. Clinical Example. A short case report that serves to dramatize the relevance of neuroanatomy introduces each chapter. 2. Chapter Outline. A list of selected headings with page numbers is provided so that immediate access is possible. This information is supplied in addition to the detailed index at the end of the book. 3. Chapter Objectives. This section details the material that is most important to learn and understand in each chapter. It emphasizes the basic information in the area being studied. This section also points out information on which examiners have repeatedly asked questions in national examinations. 4. Basic Neuroanatomy. This section provides basic information on neuroanatomical structures that are of clinical importance. Numerous examples of normal radiographs, CT scans, MRIs, and PET scans are also provided. Many cross-sectional diagrams have been included to stimulate students to think in terms of three-dimensional anatomy, which is so important in the interpretation of CT scans and MR images. 5. Clinical Notes. This section provides the practical application of neuroanatomical facts that are essential in clinical practice. It emphasizes the structures that the physician will encounter when making a diagnosis and treating a patient. It also provides the information necessary to understand many procedures and techniques and notes the anatomical "pitfalls" commonly encountered. 6. Clinical Problem Solving. This section provides the student with many examples of clinical situations in which a knowledge of neuroanatomy is necessary to solve clinical problems and to institute treatment" solutions to the problems are provided at the end of the chapter. 7. Review Questions. The purpose of the questions is threefold: to focus attention on areas of importance, to enable students to assess their areas of weakness, and to provide a form of self-evaluation when questions are answered under examination conditions. Some of the questions are centered around a clinical problem that requires a neuroanatomical answer. Solutions to the problem are provided at the end of each chapter.
The book is extensively illustrated. The majority of the figures have been kept simple; color has been used throughout this book. The number of tables in this edition has been increased. References to neuroanatomical literature are included should readers wish to acquire a deeper knowledge of an area of interest.

This thoroughly revised and updated edition (second was 1987) of Dr. Snell's popular text presents the practical aspects of neuroanatomy in a simplified manner for first and second year medical students, as well as dental and allied health students. The wealth of illustrations are purposely simple and mainly diagrammatic. National Board type questions have been included at the end of each chapter. Annotation c.
