From The Critics
Steven W. Neubauer
This is an illustrated dictionary of syndromes involving the skin that includes those found in children and adults. Color illustrations and references accompany many entries, and very brief descriptions are included for all entries. The purpose is to collect a list, in dictionary form, of syndromes that have mainly cutaneous and/or physical findings. It is meant to be a book of lists. The objective is worthy and relatively well met, including an exhaustive listing of many syndromes and references. It is meant to be a brief and quick introduction to each syndrome. The book would be useful to dermatologists, dermatology residents, and primary care physicians of adults and children. It is most useful as an introduction to a particular syndrome with references. The author is a credible authority in the subject. The illustrations are appropriate and of excellent quality. A few general references are listed at the beginning of the book. However, most entries have specific current references pertinent to the syndrome entry. Because the entries are in dictionary form and are listed in alphabetical order, no index is needed or included. The appendix consists of lists of syndromes for each of many physical features such as ulcers or hirsutism. The overall appearance of the book is excellent, although not particularly easy to read through completely. This book is useful as a reference book and is interesting to browse through. It is not meant to be read completely. Furthermore, it seems designed as a quick and easy source for access to a variety of syndromes seen in children and adults that are by no means limited to dermatology. The references provided would allow for in-depth reading beyondthese brief entries for each syndrome. It would be a nice addition for a library, clinic, or individual physician's office.

Booknews
Some 700 syndromes are presented in a clear format, with over 150 color photographs, lists of manifestations, and references, describing a multitude of variations on skin diseases seen in clinical practice. For instance, the icthyosis section has 24 variations, the epidermolysis bullosa section has 27 different types, and there are 49 aberrations of the nail plate. An appendix lists disorders by manifestation. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
