Book Info Leeds Univ., UK. Manual provides a step-by-step guide to the recognition, repair, and reconstruction of the damaged eye, whether this damage is as a result of trauma or complicated primary surgery. Companion volume to Complications of Cataract Surgery, by Noble and Simmons. High-quality color illustrations are included
Description This book presents an algorithmic approach for managing damaged anterior segment structures.
Purpose The purpose is to serve as a user friendly didactic manual for managing anterior segment trauma and postoperative complications. Although the book does not present novel surgical approaches, it is unique among existing references in terms of its brevity and efficiency.
Audience The first section presents core knowledge designed to form the conceptual scaffolding for more advanced techniques, making it ideal for the resident ophthalmologist. The second and third sections deal with advanced management issues and surgical techniques useful either as a primer for the junior attending or reference for the more experienced surgeon. The final section deals with medical-legal issues and is relevant to clinicians at all training levels.
Features The book offers a surprisingly comprehensive overview of anterior segment reparative techniques given its relatively short length. In addition, the book is well organized, beautifully illustrated, and contains excellent figures and diagrams that enhance reader comprehension. A notable shortcoming of the book is the conspicuous absence of references within the text. The short list of references at the end of the book could serve as a guide for further reading, but does nothing to support the validity of ideas and techniques presented or give credit to others when appropriate. The section on hyphema management contains important omissions including sickle cell anemia considerations and indications/techniques for anteriorchamber paracentesis and washout. Readers should be aware that the last section presents some medical-legal information that may not be relevant outside of the United Kingdom.
Assessment This is a practical and user friendly guide to the surgical management of traumatic and postoperative complications. Surgeons at all levels will find it helpful if they use it in conjunction with more detailed references.
